Scarborough Fair的歌曲原型来自The Elfin Knight(Child#2)，即“妖精骑士”（查尔德民歌集第二号），最早见诸记载是在英格兰1673年。这首民谣主要流传于英伦三岛和爱尔兰，在美国东部一些州和加拿大西部地区也有传唱的记载。在不同记载中不同的歌词版本有近20种，不同的歌名也有十多种。
Scarborough Fair原是一首古老的英国民歌，其起源可一直追溯到中世纪，保罗·西蒙在英国学习期间从英国民歌歌手Martin Carthy（马汀·卡西）处学会了这首民歌，并对其进行改编，加入了自己创作的一首The Side of A Hill作为副歌。
